Project 1: Blue Pea Farming Project
Charlene and Bernardo completed their “Foundations for Farming” course in November 2017 and then started the first Skills Development Project, Gogo’s Gardens (Grandma’s Garden) at Jacksonsdrift in the beginning of 2018.
The participants are a group of women, all over the age of 55. There are also over a thousand child headed families living in the area.
This area is an informal settlement, comprising some 22,000 people and has no electricity and limited access to water. The participants are elderly women who can no longer work but need food and income to sustain themselves as well as the child-headed homes they help.
The community has given the Gogos a piece of land where we have created vegetable gardens for them, which they attend to every day. Chicken Farming, Worm Farming and Compost creation are also part of the future plans for the project. The programme helps participants to produce fresh organic veggies and compost.
